The pendency of criminal cases in India is antithesis to the fundamental tenet of the system of justice administration, that is, the fair adjudication of cases without unreasonable delay. In order to address this concern, the Malimath Committee suggested the "Arrears Eradication Scheme" so that the problem of arrears can be effectively dealt with. Pursuant to the recommendations of the Committee, the pertinent points for action for developing a cohesive system for timely dispensation of justice within the courts of judicature were suggested. Once operationalized, the Scheme will work within the stipulated time frame to eradicate arrears.

In this context, the Department of Justice hosts the "Arrears Eradication Scheme" Portal to record the responses/action taken by all High Courts pertaining to the suggestions for eradication of arrears as per the Malimath Committee Report.
